Community Involvement

Making a difference in our community is important to us because an investment in community is an investment in the future. We are dedicated to improving the Champaign community in which we live, work and play, through active involvement and meaningful participation.

With this belief, we are proud to support these causes:

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Recognizes Northwestern Mutual for its Support of Childhood Cancer Research

It’s with heartfelt gratitude that we say thank you to Northwestern Mutual for raising critical funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Together, Northwestern Mutual offices raised more than $515,000 through its Race for Research. These dollars will support 10,300 hours of childhood cancer research. Thank you Northwestern Mutual for joining us in the fight. You are making a difference!

Liz and Jay Scott
Co-executive directors, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation

Every day we help people secure their futures and reach for their dreams. For many children, however, cancer puts their future in jeopardy. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death among kids under 19 years of age in the U.S. (National Cancer Institute). Despite this, childhood cancer research and support services are dramatically and consistently underfunded. That’s why we are committed to accelerating the search for cures and supporting thousands of children and families as they battle this disease through our partnership with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

In 2000, four-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation has evolved into a national fundraising movement. Due to the depth and expertise of ALSF’s medical review board, funding the most effective and innovative research is ensured.

Over the course of June and July, our interns held multiple lemonade stands around the Champaign community in support of Alex's Lemonade Stand. As of 2015, Northwestern Mutual has raised over $7 million for the cause, helped fund over 50,000 hours of research and provided support services to more than 3,200 children and families.

Power of the Purse Hosted by United Way

Northwestern Mutual at Power of the Purse

NM is about giving back, diversity, and supporting the communities we serve. The McClure Network Office was the title sponsor of the United Way Power of the Purse event in Champaign, Illinois. The Power of the Purse is a women empowering women initiative raising funds to open and serve the ONLY emergency family shelter in our community. When families find themselves without a place to stay, this shelter allows them to stay together and get on their feet. We have a case worker hired to also stop the cycle and create a positive change in their lives by helping them get on their feet and out of emergency shelter. The event also supports scholarships for women in our community. The Power of the Purse was held on May 5th and as a community we raised $50,000 in ONE evening to support the cause. Women empowering Women and women driving the change and leaving a lasting legacy in our community.
